SALVADOR
Capital of the State of Bahia, located at the shore of All Saints Bay. Founded in 1549, by Tomé de Sousa, to serve as a headquarter to the general-government of Brazil, it is one of the most ancient urban centers in the country. In 1763 Salvador lost the condition of Brazil's capital, which was transferred to Rio de Janeiro, but remained as the second city of the country until the XIXth century. Developed in two plans, called: low city, where dominates the portuary and business functions, and the high city, retailer business area, administrative organs, offices and residential neighborhoods.
The city is served by an agitated port, by the Eastern Brazilian railway network, by the highway Rio-Bahia and by others highways that link it to the Northeast. Constitutes one of the most searched turistical centers of the country, famous for its beaches, typical points, like the Baixa do Sapateiro, the Lacerda Elevator (that links the low to the high city) and the ‘Mercado Modelo’, which is a good option to choose presents and souvenirs between ceramic products, leather goods and wood handicraft, handmade hammocks and embroidered articles by the religious festivities.
The religious festivities are many that keep the Salvador natives in constant movement. The African slaves brought to Brazil, their religious rites, known as "Candomblé" or "macumba". Even today, the cult is strong in Bahia. From Christmas through March, Salvador calendar is full of interesting events, such as the offerings thrown into the sea for Iemanjá, during the New Year's Eve. Most of its historical monuments are preserved, among those, you find 365 outstanding churches.
