Ruins Argentina side160 |
|
250km from Iguassu Falls,
the region of “Missiones” was stage for a fascinating but sad bit of
history. In the 17th century, the Jesuits founded the Guarani Republic
which was an ill-fated experiment for a utopian society in South
America. The brutal policy of colonial Spain an Portugal destroy the
community. Visit the ruins of San Ignacio, which among the most
conserved of the period and preserve baroque traits with stone
sculptures. The communal houses, churches and building, invaded by
jungle, stand in mute testimony to the grandness of the Guarani dream.
